| About the EDN |
The ARC Economic Design Network is a research
network funded by the Australian Research Council
to support research and scholarship in economic
theory and experimental economics, and in their
application to the design of economic policy.
The EDN is funded by a five year ARC grant and by contributions by its participating institutions. Most
of its activities attract significant additional co-funding from other sources. The Network has seven contributing
instituional members, with seats on the Board, around fifteen other participating institutions, and over 250
individual members.

The objectives of the Network are:
- To coordinate and facilitate
research in economic theory, experimental
economics, and economic design
by members and participating institutions;
- To coordinate and facilitate
innovative policy development through
the application of this research;
- To provide a central forum for
communication and the dissemination
of information;
- To support regular and occasional
conferences;
- To run an annual summer/winter
school;
- To support a program of academic
visitors to the network;
- To provide professional training
and support to policy makers; and
- To build capacity in the Australasian
region, and in particular to facilitate
the development and application
of experimental economics.

The principle programs are:
- The EDN Conference and Workshop Program. The Network sponsors numerous research workshops, and sponsors special sessions, symposia and invited speakers at a number of major conferences each year.
- The EDN Winter School. The Network sponsors an annual Winter School for PhD students and Early Career Researchers. Each Winter School is conducted by outstanding international researchers and focuses on advanced topics at the research frontier.
- The EDN Visitor Program. The Network sponsors visitor programs at a number of its participating institutions. This program augments local funding to bring outstanding scholars (including current and recent Nobel Prize winners) to spend time at EDN institutions. EDN funded visitors are expected to give a public lecture, to spend tme with PhD students and Early Career Researchers, and to visit more than one EDN institution.
- The EDN Academic Collaboration Program. This program funds travel that allows co-authors to spend time together working on joint projects.
- The Phd and Early Career Researcher Program. Most EDN supported conferences and workshops offer EDN funded travel scholarships for PhD students. In addition the Network funds a limited number of international PhD travel scholarships that allow students to present their work at international conferences. The EDN also funds an annual reception for EDN members and friends at the American Social Sciences Association meetings, the most important world job market for PhD graduates in Economics. All the world's major universities and their graduates are represented at this meeting.
- The EDN Public Policy Program. Bridging the gap between research and policy is an important part of the EDN mission, and a significant number of individual and instiutional members of the Network are from the public policy profession. The network runs Public Policy Round Tables on current policy issues, and regular training workshops. Policy professionals are also regular participants at EDN workshops, conferences and the Winter School.
- The EDN Special Interest Groups. The Network has special interest groups in Economic Theory, Environmental Economics, Competition Policy, Regulatory Economics, Health Economics and especially Experimental Economics. In accordance with its objectives, the EDN has been instrumental in the establishment of a thriving research community in experimental economics.
