| An Invitation to the Workshop |
| |
|
The workshop will consist of two independent components: Topics in the Theory of Organizational Incentives and an Introduction to Experimental Economics. The workshop is intended for graduate students, preferably having completed some graduate coursework, but will be of interest to all members of the academic community interested in theory and experimental economics, especially junior faculty and to other researchers who would like to update their knowledge.
The Organizational Incentives component of the workshop will survey some of the recent theoretical literature on incentive schemes in organizations, with special emphasis on the role of peer effects in designing optimal incentives. The internal information about peer effort in the organization and its effect on agents' incentives and the principal's cost of providing these incentives will be the focus. Some interesting dualities between incentive mechanisms in multi-agent organizations and public good mechanisms as well as some empirical and experimental results will also be discussed.
The Experimental Economics component of the workshop will introduce participants to experimental methods. Controlled laboratory and field experiments have become a prominent and innovative empirical methodology in economics. A variety of important results will be discussed through a combination of hands-on participation in demonstration experiments and classroom presentations. Topics covered will include social preferences, bounded rationality, behavioural game theory, auctions, and other markets. Some policy and economic design applications of experiments will also be highlighted.
The workshop will be held in the beautiful and historic campus of the University of Melbourne. Melbourne is known for its gracious gardens, its restaurants, and for its vibrant intellectual and cultural life. Participants who intend to go on to the Econometrics Society Meetings in Alice Springs should note that the Workshop will end on Saturday 1st July, in time to travel to Alice Springs.
